A minor percent of Dubai locals use buses, trams and the underground. For public transport popularization the Roads & Transport Authority of Dubai (RTA) has set up a special day.

Public Transport Day: metro, tram and so on down the list

November 1, 2010 celebrating the 5th anniversary of its activity as a part of the festivities, the Roads & Transport Authority of Dubai held the Public Transport Day for the first time.

The question is: Why does rich Dubai with families having several cars need public transport?

Captain Obvious replies:

Firstly to unclog traffic arteries (Singapore a forward-looking city, has already come up trumps). It's just that today Dubai is not a town where everybody knows each other by sight. Nowadays it has changed into a metropolitan city. A huge city with millions of people. Nearly all newcomers strain after possessing a car. As a result: bad traffic and traffic jams. It is hard to stand in a heat wave.

Secondly to improve city ecological situation. Trolley busses, trams and the underground are green public transport because they don’t pollute air with exhaust gases. For every big city it is an apparent advantage. Unfortunately busses, city and water taxi are short of such advantages (but there are other strong points they have: capacity, common availability and maneuverability).

Thirdly the public transport enables tourists to move from one tourist attraction to another (find it in more details below).

The Dubai metro

The Dubai metro (underground) helps out a lot. The stations and the cars themselves are always clean, cool and well-ventilated.

Its grand opening fell on the amusing date: 09.09.09. Figures magic had worked out: the Dubai metro is extremely popular. But there are some disadvantages: it is crowded at rush hour. Even in a Gold-class car passengers often straphang.

In 2014 the Dubai metro carried 442 thousand passengers daily at an average.

Actually, metro is an essential part of a modern metropolitan city. It is comfortable and convenient, ecological, democratic and one more time convenient.

Metro / Underground construction comes with a price and it is only in the biggest and progressive cities as a rule.

Take a look for yourself. First undergrounds appeared in London (1863), New-York city (1868) and Athens (1869). Then as a matter of choice: Berlin (1902), Buenos Aires (1913), Madrid (1919), Tokyo (1927), Moscow (1935), Stockholm (1950), Toronto (1954)… Dubai has joined this good company since 2009.

There are two lines at work in Dubai.

The Red line connects Al Rashidiya and Jebel Ali areas. The ground part of the line runs along Sheikh Zayed Road (the main city traffic artery). Today the Red line has 25 above-ground stations and 4 underground ones.

The Green line runs through Bur Dubai and Deira encircling old town key neighborhoods.

A 49-kilometer the Purple line project connected an international airport and a new Al Maktoum airport in Jebel Ali is under development.

Animals and bicycles, free ride or out of accordance with paid seat ride are not allowed in Dubai underground. Eating, drinking and littering are prohibited either. You must not cud-chew! I didn’t know about cud-chewing. So I was singled out very quickly: I got away with 5- minute shame.

And you must not sleep! I didn’t experience it personally but the fine is pretty large – 200 dirhams. The biggest fine is for the red emergency button pushing – 2000 dirhams (equal to $545). You are prohibited to enter the car while doors are closing.

The Dubai Tram

Dubai tram system is one of the most up-to-date in the world. It was launched November 11, 2014. There are 11 operating station with two of which are connected with Dubai Marina and Lake Towers stations.

Tram lines run along New Dubai neighborhoods and Jumeirah Nearshore Street.

11.11.2014 - Here goes!

Tram terms of use are like underground ones. Violation penalties are the same. Upon getting on and off the tram NOL card must be applied to a special element (used instead of underground ticket barriers). Validation procedure (travel fare confirmation) must be undergone due to a cabin controller presence.

For road-users: for tramway road intersection moving violation a driver is supposed to be charged up to 30 thousand dirhams (that almost 8.2 thousand dollars).

For passers-by: for tram lines crossing violation, 1000 dirhams (272 dollars) are supposed to be charged.

NOL electronic ticketing card is used for all means of public transport (but taxi and water taxi).

Dubai public transport is not just the underground and trams but more than one thousand and a half of buses with sheltered and conditioned bus-stops.

It is a 24 hour ground taxi service (04 20 80808). And a water taxi as well.

The list may be added with trolley buses cruising around Downtown Dubai soon.

Dubai taxi

Dubai taxi is always Toyota cars of beige colour with red, yellow, green or blue roof. Other colour options can be seen either. Taxi getting in used to be 3 dirhams (today it has become a little bit more, 5 dirhams).

Airport taxi getting in is 25 dirhams. Then according to the meter. Minimum fare is 12 dirhams despite of the meter.  http://www.dubaitaxi.ae/en/Pages/Home.aspx

It is essential to memorize or put down Dubai taxi number (04 20 80808). In case of not having your own car this number will be of some use and not just once.

An unpleasant situation due to taxi absence can find you in far tourist places. To leave them you will need the number mentioned above. Before calling a taxi clarify your position because there are several gates in parks and conservation areas.

It is almost not possible to hail a taxi in industrial areas of the city including Jebel Ali free economic zone labyrinth.

City beaches are difficult to get a taxi as well. There are a lot who wait for a taxi but the number of cars driving by is obviously not enough.

There is no point in hailing a taxi on Palm Jumeirah Island: everybody owns cars here so taxies come round very seldom. But there is an exception – “Atlantis palm” resort complex with an aquarium, an Aqua Park and a dolphinarium.

Big malls, airport, popular walk places like Dubai Marines, some underground stations and the Financial Center are easy to get a taxi at without pre-booking.

For a tourist to keep in mind

Dubai Mall / Burj Khalifa metro station (the red line) is subway-connected with the similarly-named huge mall. Nearby there is Burj Khalifa skyscraper with observatories on the 124th and 146th floors and dancing fountains. Inside Dubai Mall there is an Olympic skating-ring, huge aquarium and underwater zoo, an Airbus А380 cockpit simulator, Sega Republic entertainments for kids and their parents, KidZania, Hamleys super-toyshop, cinemas and many others.

Mall of the Emirates metro station (the red line) is subway-connected with the similarly-named mall which, except shops, banks and supermarkets has Ski Dubai indoor ski resort, DUCTAC Theatre and a multiplex cinema. This station is convenient to get a taxi to Dubai Miracle Garden (the garden of flowers) and Dubailand autodrome.

Ibn Battuta metro station (the red line): there is a similarly-named mall across the road. Its halls are countries stylized visited by Ibn Battuta, the traveller. China, India, Persia, Egypt, Tunisia and Andalusia. The decorations are beautiful.

HealthCare City station (the green line): Wafi City Centre with premium-class stores is within walking distance. Ancient Egypt grounds were used to decorate it. Atriums are beset with the fairest mosaic. A famous Raffles Dubai 5* hotel constructed in a form of an Egyptian pyramid is located near the mall.

Deira City Center station (the red line) is very near a similarly-named mall. Here a taxi can be taken to bring you to a Dubai Festival City water taxi terminal and from that place you can get to pink flamingoes of Ras Al Khor wildlife sanctuary.

Jumeirah Lakes Towers station (the red line), Dubai Marina exit. It is a part of New Dubai. You can walk to Dubai Marina (a beautiful channel, restaurants and cafes). Jumeirah Beach Residence and fashionable promenade The Walk can be reached on foot, by taxi or by tram.

P.S I didn’t mention busses and water taxi because I haven’t experienced them yet. As soon as I get a chance to have a ride I will share my emotions. And for now I wish everybody to feel fine and have a nice day!
